James Palmer Cox was born in Hengrave on 2nd June 1888 ("Soldiers Died" has Lackford) (Thingoe Q2-1888 4A:718), baptised at Flempton, St Catherine with Hengrave on 2nd June 1889, only son of James and Tabitha COX (née COBBIN). His mother died in 1889, and his father married Sarah FULLER in 1897.

1891 census...Aged 2, he was at Coal Yards, Hengrave with his widower father James COX [48] farm bailiff born Beck Row; sisters Sarah [25] born Eriswell, Rebecca [19], Amelia [17], Fanny [14], Nellie [12] and Bessie [10] all born in Hengrave.

1901 census...Aged 12, he was at "Gesyns", Wickhambrook with his father, stepmother Sara [55] born Chevington, and her son George FULLER[12] born Fornham All Saints.

1911 census...Aged 22, farm labourer, he was at Lackford with his father and stepmother.


He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds.
After an abortive operation on Guemappe on the 11th, they were carrying out training in trenches, watched by General Byng, Commander of 3rd Army. Obviously still within range of the enemy 15" guns since James and 3 others were killed on 15th.

The Bury Free Press of 28th July 1917 reported his death, which they put at 14th June. He had been working for Mr Rutterford before joining the Army and had been wounded earlier in the war
